Quick Gesture Drawings

When it comes to gesture drawings I first try to focus on the axis lines of the body. Once these basic lines are established I continue to add the general shape of the muscle and the curve it gives to the body. At first I thought about these gesture drawings to be silly. I didn't see how drawing stick figures could prove to be an effective learning tool. Well I was wrong. After paring these sketches up with the information I retained by building the muscles on the manikins, I now get it!

I really like your gesture drawings, they remind me of those little manikins you can buy at penco that have ovals ending at every joint. I never thought of drawing like this but it actually looks like a fairly good way of getting your figure laid out.

jes,
the top drawing in this post is the strongest in terms of using long axis lines, rib cage, and pelvis.

i'll want to see more like that one for your final portfolio--less of the gestures that have each form enclosed with elliptical shapes--there you start losing the long axis lines and potential for 3D. the bottom drawing is 2nd best because you still retain some strong directional information, esp. in the back leg.
